Phonoplastics: when plastic becomes music

Visit + workshop for school groups at the exhibition Plastic. Brilliant or perverse?

This workshop-visit for school groups includes an interactive visit to the exhibition Plastic. Brilliant or perverse? and a creative workshop with the artist Santi Carcasona.

The visit encourages critical thinking about the impact of plastic. Afterwards, in the workshop, students will reuse plastic waste (bags, tubes, etc.) to create musical instruments.

For example, plastic bags will be transformed into waves, jellyfish, or floating islands to create sound and movement for Camille Saint-Saëns’ piece Aquarium, while corrugated construction pipes and old electrical cable conduits will become güiros to perform a cha-cha-cha. The activity will culminate with a participatory dynamic using boomwhackers (plastic tubes created with rhythms, harmonies, and melodies), and the activity will conclude with a collective performance of a well-known piece.

The proposal raises awareness about the environment, promotes reuse, and addresses musical aspects such as listening, coordination, and teamwork. No prior preparation is required, but each participant must bring a sturdy plastic bag from home.

This workshop-visit activity allows school groups to enjoy an interactive visit to the exhibition Plastic. Brilliant or perverse? and, subsequently, participate in a creative workshop on reusing plastic waste to transform it into a musical instrument, with the versatile artist and musician Santi Carcasona.

During the first part, a guided tour of the exhibition is offered, where critical thinking about the issue of plastic and its environmental impact is encouraged. Subsequently, in the workshop, students will have the opportunity to convert plastic waste into musical instruments with the inspiring and creative guidance of Santi Carcasona.

This proposal also promotes environmental awareness, fosters awareness of material reuse, and reduces their environmental impact. Furthermore, musical aspects such as active listening, coordination, creativity, and the inherent values of teamwork within an orchestra will be addressed.

To carry out this activity, no prior classroom work will be necessary, but each participant must bring a sturdy plastic bag with handles from home, which will be used for creating the musical instruments.

This is the educational proposal linked to the exhibition Plastic. Brilliant or perverse?.

Objectives

Understand the characteristics, properties, and history of plastic.

To realize how complex the problems we generate are and that they require a similarly complex and holistic response.

Reflect through artistic works on our relationship with objects, especially those made of plastic.

To foster critical thinking and cooperative work.

To foster a mindful approach to waste, capable of finding other uses and other lives for it (transforming them into musical instruments).

To highlight the difference between great plastic (like boomwhackers) and perverse plastic (waste).

To explore musical performance using sounds derived from objects not designed to be musical instruments.

To foster teamwork through the joint performance of a musical repertoire, promoting listening and group coordination.
