Playing with Fire
Science and art guide us in our relationship with this fascinating element. Shall we play with fire?
Fire is an element that fascinates and captivates us. Since ancient times, it has been present in countless festivals and rituals. However, especially in recent times and within the context of the current climate emergency, news of a fire disturbs us, alerts us, and reminds us, more than ever, of its destructive power.
This activity allows us to take an educational approach to fire as a natural element that is both essential and dangerous. Through the objects and artworks that comprised the temporary exhibition produced by Museu Terra and the Pau Costa Foundation, we will explore this ambivalence. With fire as an ally, humans have harnessed the power to transform matter: ceramics, glass, wrought iron, and cooking are prime examples. However, when fire rages out of control, it can be devastating.
We will learn how they have evolved in recent decades to become what are known as sixth-generation fires or climate change fires. What can firefighters do? Can fires be controlled? What is the ecological function of fires? Are there beneficial fires? These are some of the questions we will address.
Stories, emotions, and reflections will lead us to consider our responsibility in this immediate future. We will conclude by ‘playing with fire,’ expressing all that we have experienced through the creation of a collective artwork.
